No statement credits, this card wins on earn rates, not coupons.

Benefits

  • No foreign transaction fees, unlike the Essential Rewards sibling
  • Cash back redeems as statement credit with no captive currency games
  • Barclays donates to AARP Foundation based on card signups and usage

Why it earns its spot

  • +3% on travel paid in real cash back is simple and honest
  • +No annual fee and no foreign transaction fee makes it a clean trip card
  • +2% dining on the side

Where it costs you

  • No travel protections worth mentioning at this tier
  • Transferable point currencies out-earn 3% cash for big travelers
  • Branding skews the audience even though anyone can apply

The Compound Verdict

A perfectly sensible no-fee travel card: 3% cash on flights, hotels and rental cars with nothing locked into a portal. Heavy travelers will do better with transferable points, but for a few trips a year this card asks nothing and pays fairly. The no-FTF makes it the AARP card to actually carry abroad.
