US Bank Application Rules

By Alex Compton · Last verified

US Bank has no published rules and some of the most erratic underwriting of any major issuer. What it has instead is sensitivity: to inquiries, to new accounts and to whether you bank there. A deposit relationship changes outcomes more at US Bank than almost anywhere else.

Inquiry and New-Account Sensitivity

Extremely, by reputation and by data points. There is no formal threshold, but reader reports consistently show denials citing recent inquiries and new accounts, with approvals thinning out above roughly 3 recent inquiries and reader reports of a soft screen around 5 new cards anywhere in 12 months. The community heuristic of showing 0 to 2 inquiries in the trailing 6 to 12 months is exactly that, a heuristic.

What counts

  • Recent hard inquiries across bureaus
  • New card accounts anywhere in the trailing 12 months, per reader reports

What doesn't count

  • Business cards, which reportedly sit outside the soft velocity screen

Workarounds

  • CurrentCall reconsideration. It is reported as genuinely useful here, including moving existing US Bank credit line to a new card, since the bank caps total credit extended per person.
  • ExpiredFreezing the alternative bureaus SageStream and ARS to suppress the new-account signal. The historical data was mixed at best, SageStream has since merged into LexisNexis, and current behavior is unverified. Treat as historical.

The Relationship Effect

Yes, materially, per consistent reporting. A US Bank checking or savings account improves approval odds, especially for profiles heavy with recent accounts, and reader reports suggest aging the account a few months before applying helps. For the Smartly card the relationship is the product: top earning requires six figures in linked US Bank balances under the structure in force since 2025.

What counts

  • An existing US Bank deposit relationship, ideally aged a few months

Workarounds

  • CurrentOpen a checking or savings account well before your card application rather than alongside it.

Bonus Rules

US Bank publishes no waiting period. The operative restriction is that you cannot earn the bonus on a card you currently hold open. After closing, US Bank cards are considered repeatable with no formal timer, and the practical limiter is approval sensitivity rather than bonus language. Business cards do not report to personal bureaus.

What counts

  • Currently holding that exact card open

What doesn't count

  • Closed cards. No published clock restarts eligibility
  • US Bank business cards on your personal report. They do not appear there

Workarounds

  • CurrentClose, cool off, reapply when your inquiry profile is clean. Reader reports on safe spacing vary, so there is no verified minimum.
