The Amex Platinum and Capital One Venture X are the two premium travel cards people actually argue about, and they are built on opposite philosophies. The Platinum charges $895 and buries the value in a stack of credits and the best lounge network in the industry. The Venture X charges $395 and hands the value back so simply that the fee effectively disappears.

The Compound Verdict
The Venture X is the right premium card for most people, and it is not close: the fee washes itself, 2x covers all spend, and the whole family gets lounge access free. The Platinum wins for a specific traveler, one who flies through Centurion-served airports several times a year, will genuinely use the hotel and dining credits, and wants status and FHR treatment on luxury stays. If you have to ask whether you would use the Platinum's coupon book, you would not; take the Venture X.

Is the Amex Platinum worth it over the Venture X?
Only if you fly enough to live in lounges and will actually use the credits. The Platinum's edge is Centurion access, hotel status, FHR perks, and a much bigger welcome bonus. The Venture X's edge is everything else: $500 less in fee, self-offsetting credits, 2x everywhere, and free authorized users with lounge access.
Which has better lounge access, Amex Platinum or Venture X?
The Platinum, clearly: Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta, Priority Pass, and Plaza Premium. The Venture X includes Priority Pass and Capital One's own lounges, a network that is good and growing but much smaller.
Can the Venture X be your only credit card?
It works better as an only card than any other premium card, since it earns 2x on all purchases with no foreign transaction fee. The Platinum cannot: at 1x on everyday spend, it needs a companion card for groceries, gas, and daily purchases.
