The Ultimate Guide to Citi ThankYou Points
ThankYou Points are the quiet overachiever. Citi's earning rates are arguably the best in the business, and the Strata Elite made Citi the only transferable currency with direct access to American Airlines. We value ThankYou Points at 1.8 cents each.
How to earn ThankYou Points
The Strata Premier is one of the strongest earning cards anywhere: 3x on travel, gas, EV charging, restaurants, and supermarkets. That single card bonuses most of a normal budget. The Strata Elite sits above it with premium credits, elevated travel earning, and the keys to the American Airlines transfer.
The no-fee supporting cast is where Citi gets unfair. The Custom Cash earns 5% on your top eligible category each cycle, the Double Cash earns 2% on everything, and the Rewards+ rounds every purchase up to the nearest 10 points and rebates 10% of redemptions. All of them convert to full transferable ThankYou Points when paired with a Premier or Elite.
Stack the Citi Shop portal and Citi Merchant Offers on top. Neither is best in class, but both add points to purchases you were making anyway.
- ▸Strata Elite: premium tier, unlocks American Airlines transfers
- ▸Strata Premier: 3x travel, gas, dining, groceries, the earning core
- ▸Custom Cash: 5x on your top category each cycle, up to a monthly cap
- ▸Double Cash: 2x everywhere as convertible points
- ▸Rewards+: round-up on every purchase plus 10% redemption rebate
How to redeem: floors, portals, and the AA key
ThankYou Points cash out at 1 cent through statement credits, checks, and the travel portal on most cards. Treat 1 cent as the floor and do not overthink it. Gift card promotions occasionally beat it, but barely.
Transfers are the point. The full partner list requires a Premier or Elite. Lower cards transfer to a partial list at reduced ratios, so the system only works properly with a premium card anchoring the account.
The Strata Elite's American Airlines access changes the calculus for AA flyers. No other bank currency feeds AAdvantage. If web specials and AA partner awards are your game, Citi is not optional, it is the whole supply line.
Transfer partners and ratios
Citi's airline list transfers at 1:1 and most transfers post quickly, many instantly. The hotel side carries the famous Choice ratio, where one ThankYou Point becomes two Choice points.
American Airlines requires the Strata Elite. The rest of the list is available with a Premier.
- ▸American Airlines AAdvantage: 1:1, Strata Elite only
- ▸Turkish Miles&Smiles: 1:1
- ▸Avianca LifeMiles: 1:1, usually instant
- ▸Air France/KLM Flying Blue: 1:1, usually instant
- ▸Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: 1:1
- ▸EVA Air Infinity MileageLands: 1:1
- ▸Qatar Airways Avios: 1:1
- ▸Wyndham Rewards: 1:1
- ▸Choice Privileges: 1:2
Best transfer partners explained
American Airlines is the marquee. AA web specials price dynamic awards on AA metal at deep discounts, and AAdvantage partner awards on Qatar, Etihad, and Japan Airlines remain some of the best published values in the sky. Feeding AAdvantage from card spend, at scale, is something only Citi can offer.
Choice at 1:2 is the stealth hotel play. Choice points at double ratio can beat 2 cents per ThankYou Point at the right properties, especially in Scandinavia and Japan where Choice-affiliated hotels price reasonably in points and expensively in cash.
Turkish and Avianca give Citi the same Star Alliance tricks Capital One enjoys, and EVA Air is a rare direct partner for booking EVA's well-regarded business class across the Pacific. Qatar Avios connects to the broader Avios ecosystem, and Avios balances can move between Qatar, British Airways, and other Avios programs once there.
Program quirks: pooling rules and the 1:2 trap door
Citi lets you combine ThankYou Points across your own Citi cards into one pool. The pool inherits the best transfer rights in the account, which is why a Double Cash plus Premier combo behaves like one big premium card.
Mind the downgrade clock. Points earned on a premium card can lose full transfer rights if the premium card closes, with a window to use shared points. Keep the Premier or Elite open while you hold a meaningful balance.
Citi also allows point sharing with other ThankYou members, but shared points historically carry a short expiration after the move, so only share what will be redeemed promptly.
Our strategy: the Citi quartet
Run a Strata Premier, a Custom Cash, a Double Cash, and optionally a Rewards+. Groceries or gas hit 5x on the Custom Cash, broad categories hit 3x on the Premier, everything else earns 2x on the Double Cash, and the Rewards+ rebates 10% of every redemption. It is the highest blended earn rate of any major bank setup.
Add the Strata Elite only if American Airlines matters to you. For AA loyalists it is the single most important premium card decision in the market. For everyone else, the Premier-led quartet captures most of the value at a fraction of the fees.
Transfer for AA web specials, Choice at 1:2, and Star Alliance awards through Turkish or Avianca. Cash out at 1 cent when nothing better is in range. The quartet earns so fast that even average redemptions compound.
Sweet Spots
American Airlines web specials
Transfer to AAdvantage through the Strata Elite and book discounted dynamic awards on AA metal. Web specials regularly price domestic and international flights far below standard levels.
AAdvantage partner awards on Qatar and JAL
AA's partner chart still publishes strong rates for Qatar Qsuites and Japan Airlines premium cabins. Feeding those awards from card spend is unique to Citi.
Choice at 1:2 in Scandinavia and Japan
The 1:2 ratio doubles your points into a program with underpriced award rates at Nordic Choice and Japanese properties. Done right, this clears 2 cents per ThankYou Point on hotel stays.
Turkish Miles&Smiles Star Alliance chart
The same Turkish chart magic available to Capital One works from Citi: cheap United-metal domestic awards and strong international business class pricing.
EVA Air business class across the Pacific
Citi is a rare direct transfer door into EVA's Infinity MileageLands, which books EVA's excellent business class to Taipei and beyond without hunting partner space.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸Do ThankYou Points expire?
Points tied to open accounts do not expire. Points shared to another member or left after an account closure carry expiration windows, so redeem those promptly.
▸Can I combine points across Citi cards?
Yes. Your Citi cards pool into one ThankYou balance, and the pool gets the transfer rights of your best card. A Double Cash feeding a Premier is the classic combo.
▸Are transfers to partners reversible?
No. Once points become AA miles or Choice points, they stay there. Confirm availability before moving anything.
▸Do I need the Strata Elite for all transfers?
No, only for American Airlines. The Strata Premier unlocks the rest of the full partner list at 1:1, plus Choice at 1:2.
▸What happens to my points if I close my Premier?
Points may lose premium transfer rights and unconverted balances face a use-it window. Downgrade instead of closing, or transfer out before the change.
